FIFA Announces Controversial Partnership with Saudi Oil Giant Aramco

FIFA Announces Controversial Partnership with Saudi Oil Giant Aramco
FIFA has unveiled a partnership with Saudi Arabia's state-owned oil firm, Aramco, extending the deal until 2027. This arrangement grants Aramco sponsorship rights for the Men's World Cup in 2026 and the Women's World Cup the following year.

Being a sponsor of Formula 1 and a partner of the International Cricket Council, Aramco continues its involvement in international sports despite facing criticism for supporting sportswashing, a process used to improve Saudi Arabia's international reputation through high-profile events.

FIFA President, Gianni Infantino, praised Aramco's commitment to supporting world-class events and grassroots sport initiatives.

Controversially, Saudi Arabia's global influence on sports has been questioned due to allegations covering human rights violations, such as women's rights abuses, homophobia, and restrictions on free speech. Moreover, it faces scrutiny for its involvement in the war in Yemen and the 2018 murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

The Aramco deal has sparked further debate about FIFA's environmental stance. Aramco, as the world’s most massive oil producer, emphasises the complicated relationship between FIFA and climate concerns. Despite FIFA's assurance to mitigate the environmental impact, green groups, including Fossil Free Football and Greenpeace, criticised the move, proposing FIFA should cut off ties with large pollution-causing companies.

Saudi Arabia has currently bid for hosting the 2034 World Cup, with FIFA due to confirm the host later this year. This submission has led Amnesty International to call for binding agreements that protect individuals from exploitation, discrimination, and repression.

FIFA's decision opens up critical discussions around the influence of oil corporations in sports and their impact on climate change. As a sport enjoyed by billions globally, football faces the task of balancing its global reach with its commitment to upholding ethical and environmental standards.
